Energy consumption in Italy 2015-2023, by source

Over the past few years, natural gas was the main energy source in Italy, only in 2023 was surpassed by oil. The consumption of gas amounted to 50.3 million tons of oil equivalent in 2023, down from 56.1 in 2022. Oil was the main energy source in Italy, with over 53 million tons consumed that year. By comparison, the consumption of energy generated from renewables added up to less than 30 million tons of oil equivalent.   

 Primary energy consumption

The amount of primary energy consumed in Italy was 5.94 exajoules in 2023. A decreasing trend can be observed in the energy consumption in the country, especially concerning oil, solid fuels, and electricity imported to the country. 

Energy consumption by sector

In 2022, the transportation sector was the leading energy consumer in Italy, at over 36 million metric tons of oil equivalent, accounting for a large share of non-electrical energy consumption. The residential sector ranked second that year.
